Cycling is on the up which, on the whole, is a good thing. In the grid cycle parking is tricky especially if you are in a flat without storage or if you are working in the grid and want to cycle to work. Westminster's solution for residents is to provide cycle hangars. I think that we can all agree that they aren't the prettiest things (we are working on that), but they do provide a safe, dry and warmish place to house bicycles. Demand for them is high. There are currently over 300 people on the waiting list for Pimlico bike hangars.
Amanda and Antonia met up with Richard Gaynor , Chair of FREDA, to discuss the cycle hangars and their positioning. WCC has proposed and placed many of the hangars on the, already cluttered, pavements. We believe that they would and could look better if they were placed on the road, as many already have been. For the existing and proposed hangars on the pavements, Richard has identified suitable alternative spots that are generally on single yellows so that they do not take away from residents parking. Richard has already met with Jim Glen WCC's Cycling Supremo and one of Pimlico's councillors. Next week he is due to meet with WCC to discuss whether the proposed sites are agreeable to them. We hope that they are.
In addition it has been noted that the cycle hangars are getting rather full of leaves and rubbish. Councillor Jim Glen has confirmed that the Council will be taking control of the cleaning of the hangars - so this will no longer be an issue going forward.
We will also be establishing a Cycle Committee - this will discuss supply and demand of all types of cycle parking for residents and workers, positioning of parking, style of street furniture and any other issues surrounding this.
If you have any thoughts on the hangars please do feedback to us ilovepimlico@gmail.com.
Hoping to get a spot for my bicycle in one of these hangars around Pimlico!
